    • Conflicting evidence states that Leonard was born 1866 at an unknown location. He was a witness at Jesse HUMBER and Marcella PAYNE's wedding February 20, 1879 at Cow Head, District of St. Barbe, Newfoundland. Entry No. 97 - These are to certify that Jesse HUMBER, bachelor, of Bonne Bay, N.W. Coast of Newfoundland and Marcella PAYNE, spinster, of Cow Head, Newfoundland were married according to the rite of the Church of England, on this twentieth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy nine. (The said Jesse HUMBER and Marcella PAYNE having been previously married by a layman in the absence of the clergyman on the 12th August 1878). By me Joseph J CURLING, Missionary Priest. The above marriage was solemnized between us; Jesse HUMBER and her mark X Marcella PAYNE. In the presence of us; C Leonard PAYNE, his mark X Leonard PAYNE, her mark X Emily Jane PAYNE.
