Robert was born circa 1852 at Bay of Islands, Newfoundland. Robert was the son of John BRAKE and Ann WHEELER. He married «b»Eliza Ann«/b» «b»PAYNE«/b» December 6, 1874 at Bonne Bay, District of St. Barbe, Newfoundland. Entry No. 46 - Robert BRAKE of Bay of Islands, bachelor, and Eliza PAYNE of Bonne Bay, spinster, were married according to the rites of the Church of England on the sixth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy four. (The said Robert BRAKE and Eliza PAYNE having been married, by a layman on the 25th November 1872, there being no clergyman to be found in the place at the time, according to a custom prevailing on the shore). By me Joseph J CURLING, Missionary Priest. The above marriage was solemnized between us; his mark X Robert BRAKE and her mark X Eliza PAYNE. In the presence of us; his mark X Mark R ROBERTS, her mark X Frances LUNDRIGAN.

Married in the Church of the Epiphany according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England, By me Charles William HOLLANDS. This marriage was solemnized between us: The mark of X Robert BRAKE & the mark of X Anna Maria CROCKER. In the presence of us: his mark X Elijah PAYNE, Diana PAYNE.

Ann was born circa 1830. Believed to be the daughter of one of three brothers William, John or Richard Wheeler. She married John Brake circa 1847 son of John Mathews Brake and Elizabeth Blanchard. Ann died at age unknown.

«b»Phillip«i»«sup»2«/i»«/sup» PAYNE«/b» (John«i»«sup»1«/i»«/sup») was born at Little Bay, Bonne Bay, District of St. Barbe, Newfoundland 1823. Phillip died June 16, 1873 at an unknown location, at age 49. His body was interred after June 16, 1873 at Woody Point, Bonne Bay, Disrtict of St. Barbe, Newfoundland. Tombstone Inscription: In Memory of Philip PAYNE who died June 16, 1873.

On July 11, 1990 I had visited the old Anglican Cemetery at Woody Point, where I found the broken Headstone of Philip buried beneath the top soil, unable to read the entire inscription he died on 16 June 1873.

Headstone Inscription, Philip Payne Anglican Cemetery, Woody Point, Newfoundland. Located near the business district by the waterfront, it was the first of two cemeteries for the Anglican Church at Woody Point.

first permanent settlers at Winter House Brook establishing

themselves there from Rocky Harbour by 1856 on a point which

became known as Payne's Point, near a br ook later named
