Entry No. 40 - These are to certify that James GUICHARD, bachelor, of Saint Pere near St, Malo, France and Hannah BIGGIN, spinster, of Daniel's Harbour, Newfoundland were married by me according to the rites of the Church of England, on the fourth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy four. (The said James GUICHARD and Hannah BIGGIN having been previously married by a layman in October 1869, according to a custom prevailing on the shore, there being at the time no clergyman to be found in the place). Joseph J CURLING, Missionary Deacon, Bay of Islands. The above marriage was solemnized between us; his mark X James GUICHARD and Hannah BIGGIN. Tombstone inscription; Erected by Levi HOUSE in memory of his beloved wife who died August 21, 1856 age 34 years.

Mary has a tombstone in a feild at Cow Head along with two other graves without markers, it reads Mary PAYNE died March 30, 1862 age 69 years.     «tab»According to statements in local histories some researchers have concluded that Mary, wife of Charles PAYNE Senior, early resident of Cow Head, was born Mary BROOKS. This conclusion may not be correct and was likely based on the incomplete or biased reading of a notation in Bishop FIELD's 1849 List of Inhabitants. The conclusion is also questionable in light of a more recently discovered document, The Last Will and Testament of John BROOK, 1823.

    Mary Brooks (daughter of Robert Brooks and Mary (Park) Brooks) was born 1793 in Born with Indian name, She went to England and came back with the name Brooks, and died March 30, 1862 in Cow Head, NL, Canada. She married Charles Payne on 1810.

    According to statements in local histories some researchers have concluded that Mary, wife of Charles Payne Senior early resident of Cow Head, was born Mary Brooks.
