Robert was born circa 1852 at Bay of Islands, Newfoundland. Robert was the son of John BRAKE and Ann WHEELER. He married «b»Eliza Ann«/b» «b»PAYNE«/b» December 6, 1874 at Bonne Bay, District of St. Barbe, Newfoundland. Entry No. 46 - Robert BRAKE of Bay of Islands, bachelor, and Eliza PAYNE of Bonne Bay, spinster, were married according to the rites of the Church of England on the sixth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy four. (The said Robert BRAKE and Eliza PAYNE having been married, by a layman on the 25th November 1872, there being no clergyman to be found in the place at the time, according to a custom prevailing on the shore). By me Joseph J CURLING, Missionary Priest. The above marriage was solemnized between us; his mark X Robert BRAKE and her mark X Eliza PAYNE. In the presence of us; his mark X Mark R ROBERTS, her mark X Frances LUNDRIGAN.

«tab»Robert died 1920 at Trout River, District of St. Barbe, Newfoundland, at age 68. Robert was settled at Winter House Brook, Bonne Bay by 1872, however, he left in the late 1880's and settled permanently at Trout River.

Marriage solemnized in the Church of the Epiphany, Woody Point, in the Mission of Bonne Bay in the Diocese of Newfoundland, July 14, 1889, Robert BRAKE, age 36, widower and fisherman of Winterhouse Brook Cove, son of John BRAKE, fisherman and Anna Maria CROCKER, age 18, spinster of Winterhouse Brook Cove, daughter of Charles CROCKER, fisherman. Married in the Church of the Epiphany according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England, By me Charles William HOLLANDS. This marriage was solemnized between us: The mark of X Robert BRAKE & the mark of X Anna Maria CROCKER. In the presence of us: his mark X Elijah PAYNE, Diana PAYNE.

Ann was born circa 1830. Believed to be the daughter of one of three brothers William, John or Richard Wheeler. She married John Brake circa 1847 son of John Mathews Brake and Elizabeth Blanchard. Ann died at age unknown.

Phillip died June 16, 1873 at an unknown location, at age 49. His body was interred after June 16, 1873 at Woody Point, Bonne Bay, Disrtict of St. Barbe, Newfoundland. Tombstone Inscription: In Memory of Philip PAYNE who died June 16, 1873.

On July 11, 1990 I had visited the old Anglican Cemetery at Woody Point, where I found the broken Headstone of Philip buried beneath the top soil, unable to read the entire inscription he died on 16 June 1873.

Phillip, a fisherman, and his brother Charles were the

first permanent settlers at Winter House Brook establishing

themselves there from Rocky Harbour by 1856 on a point which

became known as Payne's Point, near a br ook later named

John Matthews Brake married Elizabeth Blanchard, daughter of William and Elizabeth. (We know this from notes to the will of Joseph Blanchard, Elizabeth's brother). John was one of Ralph and Jane's older child ren...born in Burgeo I believe. He was a widower at the time of Feild's visit. We believe that most of John's progeny constitute the Brake's of Trout River and Woody Point area.

Sarah had a brother or step brother, Richard Cross, who was

Sarah Singleton was to Wed. Joseph Rendell. Some confusion existshere. In the court records Sarah is noted as being the Brother ofRichard Cross. Several assumptions can be made as to the surnameSingleton. Probably the most obvious one was tha t Sarah was a widowwho had Married a man named Singleton and retained that Family nameafter his death.Information from (Columist Don Morris resides at 90Merrymeeting Rd.St. John's, Nfld.,2W1.
