Entry No. 46 - Robert BRAKE of Bay of Islands, bachelor, and Eliza PAYNE of Bonne Bay, spinster, were married according to the rites of the Church of England on the sixth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy four. (The said Robert BRAKE and Eliza PAYNE having been married, by a layman on the 25th November 1872, there being no clergyman to be found in the place at the time, according to a custom prevailing on the shore). By me Joseph J CURLING, Missionary Priest. The above marriage was solemnized between us; his mark X Robert BRAKE and her mark X Eliza PAYNE. Married in the Church of the Epiphany according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England, By me Charles William HOLLANDS. This marriage was solemnized between us: The mark of X Robert BRAKE & the mark of X Anna Maria CROCKER. In the presence of us: his mark X Elijah PAYNE, Diana PAYNE.

Tombstone Inscription: In Memory of Philip PAYNE who died June 16, 1873.

    On July 11, 1990 I had visited the old Anglican Cemetery at Woody Point, where I found the broken Headstone of Philip buried beneath the top soil, unable to read the entire inscription he died on 16 June 1873.

    John Matthews Brake married Elizabeth Blanchard, daughter of William and Elizabeth. (We know this from notes to the will of Joseph Blanchard, Elizabeth's brother). John was one of Ralph and Jane's older child ren...born in Burgeo I believe. He was a widower at the time of Feild's visit. We believe that most of John's progeny constitute the Brake's of Trout River and Woody Point area.
