    Joseph Brake
Joseph was referred to by J. B. Jukes in 1839 (1993:52) as an Indian:
On the opposite side of the sound to the old man's house we found an Indian wigwam, with an old Indian woman and her two daughters, one of the latter of whom has a daughter married to one of the old man's sons opposite. The old woman had a kind of moustache tattooed on each cheek, and spoke nothing but Indian, but one of the daughters could speak English. An Indian man, the husband of one of the daughters, was living with them, but was now away in the woods.

This daughter of the old Indian woman was Mary Mitchell. The old woman's husband was Captain Jock Mitchell
    [antecedent of Matthew Mitchell].

August 3, 1849. We went on shore directly after breakfast to visit a family who had returned from the fishery yesterday evening. The man is a Brake, brother to the Brakes mentioned before. The mother is a Micmac Indian from St. George's Bay... Her father, she said, was Captain Jock. Four of their children were baptized with the conditional form.

Contents of Ralph Brakes Will as sent from Diana Southern email - DianaMSouthern@aol.com

Briefly, here are the contents of Ralph Brake's will dated 1838. It was
proved at it's third attempt in 1866, previous years, 1844 and 1848, but by
that time only one son, William Matthews Brake survived. Apparently Edward,
the educated one, had intermeddled with his father's estate in England and I
don't know what happened to the money. It is all down on the administration
of 1866 in "black and white"

In the will Ralph left:- son, John Matthews Brake - £40, son, Joseph
Matthews Brake - £100, daughter Elizabeth Matthews Brake, wife of Thomas Park
    - £20, daughter Jane Matthews Brake, wife of William Wheeler - £20, son,
Robert Matthews Brake - £100, remainder after payment of debts etc. to sons,
Robert Matthews Brake, Ralph Matthews Brake, William Matthews Brake, Thomas
Matthews Brake, and Edward Matthews Brake equally as long as these six
remained in partnership with each other, but if any of the sons came out of
the partnership before Ralph's death, then he was to be paid £100 in full
discharge of his share. If any of the brothers in partnership should died
before Ralph's death, then the business was to be diviided amongst the
    remaining brothers in that partnership.
William Blanchard of the BOI and Joseph Bird from England were the executors.

Jane (daughter of Matthews, Old Man) was born about 1773 in Burgeo, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada; died about 1819 in Bonne Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada; was buried in Bay of Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
